Collectors Guide To CD Singles

As I remember compact disc singles first appeared in Japan, shortly followed by USA, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Taiwan & Thailand and since the first issue back in 1985 these have become the biggest collected commercial format generating so much interest among collectors throughout the world.
For this reason I have created this insight into collecting CD singles and I plan to build this and add reference to ALL CD pressings for each country listed and there will be links to pictures of every Cd released, this may take time so come back again, I hope you enjoy it, Kev.

JAPAN

Without any doubt, Japans 'Material Girl' has to be the first commercial Madonna CD single. Originally issued with 28XD catalogue prefix: a prefix adopted by all original Japanese compact disc singles. Other original, and now mega rare, CD singles include 'Material Girl', 'Dress You Up', 'True Blue' and 'La Isla Bonita', all tend to fetch £40 easily, when they appear on sale!

All early CD's were then replaced with WPCP prefix reissues. 'Remixed Prayers', the EP issued for Like A Prayer came with 2OP catalogue number prefix, with all following releases carrying WPCP prefix, used right up to 'Take A Bow' when WPCR seems to have appeared.
Remember that all CD EPs come with great lyrics insert covers and a card spine 'OBI' which is wrapped around the outer hinge side of the casing, so always check weather the OBI is included, still attatched, or what condition it is.
One more reissue occured some time in 1997, when 14 CD EPs were re-released once again, all in original covers and with identical track listing to the originals. Issued as part of a COLLECTOR SERIES and luckily all pressings came with new catalogue numbers starting 'WPCR1501' with Material Girl, ending with Take A Bow 'WRCR1514'. From this point on all Japanese pressings appear to adopt this new 'WPCR' prefix. "see the Japanese discography for complete listing"

Japan was then the first country to produced a 3" compact disc single. The first confirmed release was 'Spotlight' issued back in 1988. Japanese pressings are totally unique and come in a 3" by 6" plastic snapable casing. Spotlight was followed by 'Like A Prayer', Express Yourself', 'Cherish', 'Oh Father' and so on upto the present day. The earlier pressings generally appear more collectable and often fetch up to £20 in mint condition.
