GERMANY

7599-21139-2

7599-21140-2

7599-21141-2
At about the same time japan issued 'Spotlight', Germany produced three beautiful 3" CD singles, all three were consequently released in Britain but these were definately German made.
These CDs included seven past tracks:
  • Lucky Star and Borderline on the first
  • Holiday and Everybody on the second
  • Into The Groove, Who's That Girl and Causing A Commotion
  • Shortly after the release of the 3" CDs, these star picture sleeve pressings were then re-released in 5" format. All came in jewel cases and carried identical tracks and catalogue numbers to the originals. One point worth a mention was that 'Everybody' is credited as '4:57' on the sleeve but the disc displays the correct '5:57' time.

INTERESTING GERMAN (NON UK) CD SINGLES

Many UK released pressings may have been made available to buy in Germany also. These will probably be identical to British sold copies. As far as I have been able to find out, most UK sold CDs have possibly been made available throughout Germany since 1988, and may be identicle to those from the UK. These may even carry the UK's unique W---- catalogue number, as well as their regular German and French ones. The only difference between these pressings and those sold in the UK is that those released in Germany may have the 'W----' prefix BELOW the Geraman '9---' prefix. Where as the British copies will have the '9---' prefix BELOW the 'W----' prefix. But I have yet to totally confirm this.

If the above is true then all German CD discographies will include most CD singles from the UK's discography. If not then only the CDs listed below are truely German so only these will be the ones listed.

I have however noticed and can confirm that most of the Music era CD singles issued in the UK WERE definately available in Germany. With germany then also getting additional CD singles that were certainly NOT available for general sale here in the UK.

German only copies are any pressing that is only available in UK through import, and certainly not pressed for the UK market or music charts and will not carry the 'W----' number prefixes, instead just the '9---' prefix.

German-only copies (not released in UK) that DON'T include the 'W----' prefix include:
  • Justify My Love '7599-21825-2' B&W pic sleeve.
  • Justify My Love '7599-21825-2' light blue sleeve.
  • Rescue Me '9362-40034-2' purple picture sleeve.
  • Rescue Me Remixes '9362-40035-2' B&W picture sleeve.
  • Erotica '9362-40657-2' regular picture sleeve.
  • Erotica Remixes '9362-40706-2' gold rimmed picture sleeve.
  • Bad Girl '9362-40812-2' with Deeper And Deeper remixes.
  • Rain '9362-40984-2' with 'Water' picture sleeve.
  • Bye Bye Baby '9362-41196-2' 'Salor' picture sleeve.
  • Take A Bow The Remixes with red sticker.
  • Human Nature '9362-43535-2' with 'Floral' disc and sleeve.
  • Love Don't Live Here Anymore with USA p/s & yellow disc.
  • Power Of Good-bye p/s and four mixes.
  • Nothing Really Matters p/s w/ Vocal Mix
  • Nothing Really Matters p/s w/ Vikram mix
  • American Pie p/s w four mixes rather than 3 as found on the UK cds.
  • Music p/s w four mixes rather than 3 as found on the UK cds.
  • Don't Tell Me' with four mixes.
  • What If Feels Like For A Girl with different four mixes to UK four mix CD2

There are other German CD singles that have been confirmed as being released in UK and Germany, and these have been listed below. These will look very similar to UK ones but may not carry the 'W---' prefix, or may have the '9---' prefix in the more prominant position.

  • Dear Jessie with picture disc graphics.

  •

Germany also offers some great card sleeve CD singles. These first appeared, as far as I know for 'Take A Bow' and have appeared for all releases since. Unlike the jewel case CDs, these are not released here in the UK so are solely for German stores. Card sleeve CD singles generally carry just two tracks, usually the same ones that appear on the cassette single or 7". These generally sell for around £7, with the jewel case CDs fetching around £10.

Recently, since Music was released anyway, it has been apparent that all card sleeve CD singles were NOT actually made available in Germany. These were possibly manufactured solely for France, Sweded and other European countries (NOT UK though!). These are technically German as they WERE manufactured in Germany!?

    GERMAN CD REISSUES

In 1995 WEA decided to totally re-release a Madonna back catalogue from 'Everybody' to 'Vogue' in compact disc form twenty-three in total.

All pressings came in jewel cases and each had the original covers. The discs were yellow with identical design, each had a 7599 catalogue number prefix and all went on sale in Germany and UK: here they initially sold at £7.99 and many are still available for under £10.

The complete catalogue includes the following titles:

  • Everybody
  • Burning Up
  • Holiday
  • Lucky Star
  • Borderline
  • Like A Virgin
  • Material Girl
  • Angel
  • Into The Groove
  • Dress You Up
  • Live To Tell
  • Papa Don't Preach
  • True Blue
  • Open Your Heart
  • La Isla Bonita
  • Who's That Girl
  • Causing A Commotion
  • The Look Of Love
  • Like A Prayer
  • Like A Prayer (sandy p/s)
  • Express Yourself
  • Cherish
  • Vogue

  • GERMAN PROMOTIONAL CD SINGLES

The first promo CD single appeared for 'I'll remember' with at least one promo CD issued for each commercial single release. All come with special PRCD catalogue number prefix and many have special disc graphics (featured on the left) although these don't usually include picture sleeves or back inserts. The rarest german CD has to be 'Buenos Aires' which now fetches up to £100 here in UK, dispite it's total lack of picture cover or backing inlay.
A five-track sampler CD was issued for 'Evita', and came with picture sleeve and disc graphics, as did 'You Must Love Me'.

'Frozen' also came with a full picture cover, 'product information insert' and yellow disc, although there is a far scarce second CD for 'Frozen (PRCD1502) which came with three 'Radio Edits' and special picture sleeve design (pictured left), this is mega rare now and I have only seen a handful in existance. 'Ray Of Light' was also pressed in Germany and is identical to the British copies except for it's 'PRCD1142' catalogue number and German 'product information insert'. There is also a second promo CD, which is mega rare and comes with propper picture sleeve and includes four 'Edits'. This pressing is as rare as the second 'Frozen' promo and is set to be one of Germany's all time rarest pressings. 'Drowned World' produced a great aqua-blue disc promo CD, also issued in the UK although actually made in Germany. this pressing came with unique '3333 00054-2' catalogue number and full picture sleeve. Comes with 'Radio Edit (4:45)'.

'Power Of Good-bye' has produced a great promo CD which was also issued in the UK. This came with unique 'Pro 01055' catalogue number and floral graphics, along with Album Version and product information insert with some.

'Nothing Really Matters' was issued in identical promo to the UK one but has different 'German' catalogue prefix (PRO 1211). 'Beautiful Stranger' came with 'PR 01417 CD' catalogue number, promotional picture insert sleeve and unique blue disc graphics. This was also issued in the UK. As were both 'American Pie' promo CD singles: the 2 mix came with 'PRO1802' catalogue number and the 5 mix came with 'PRO1819' catalogue number, both included a white disc graphic and same p/s variation as the UK CD1.
See the Madonna Ultiography Book for full info, track listings and catalogue numbers of ALL German releases.

The promotional CDs for 'Music', 'Don't Tell Me', 'What It Feels Like For A Girl' and 'Amazing', were similar to 'American Pie', 'Beautiful Stranger' and 'Drowned World', in that they were all pressed for Europe, not solely UK. This means that they had European catalogue number prefix. There were two Music CDs, the first had hard casing, insert sleeve, pink disc graphics and just an 'Album Version'. The second CD was a rarer issue coming in jewel caing, full p/s, brown grahics and three 'Edits' (PR 02055).

'Don't Tell Me' also produced two different CDs: The first coming in pink and white 'Maverick' sleeve with similar disc graphics in jewel casing. This looks the same as the Security Service' album promos issued for Evita, Ray Of Light and Evita! Although it was NOT a Security Service edition though! Has '4:10' Edit Mix. (Bigger Image). There was then a second three track promo CD issued in picture insert.

'What If Feels Like For A Girl' (PR 02461), came in jewel casing with picture insert. The disc was silver with white horseshoe. This came with Edit 4:02 mix and copies were easily acquired so isn't too scarce. (Bigger Image). There was far rarer Spanish Version promo CD but this WAS strickly for the German market as not for certainly not for the UK!

'Amazing' was also pressed in promotional format for Gremany, and Europe, although it was never actually released as a single anywhere. This presing had a pink and white 'Security Service' style pressing with pink and white disc and 3:44 mix in jewel casing. The catalogue number was 'PR02645' and this was available in the UK!.
